Every night, your brain produces hours of vivid, often bizarre experiences that you mostly forget within minutes of waking. Dreaming is one of the most universal human experiences — and one of the least understood. Despite decades of research, science still can’t fully say why we do it. When dreaming happens
Sleep isn’t a single state; it moves through cycles. The most vivid dreaming is tied to a stage called REM — rapid eye movement — sleep, named for the way your eyes dart around beneath closed lids. Theory 2: Dreams are emotional rehearsal
Another influential theory frames dreams as a kind of emotional gym. By simulating tense, frightening, or socially awkward scenarios in a safe, offline state, the brain may be practicing how to handle them — and taking the sharp edge off difficult memories. This fits the observation that emotionally charged events are especially likely to show up in dreams.
Theory 3: It’s the brain making sense of noise
A more deflationary theory suggests dreams begin as random signals firing in the sleeping brain, which the higher brain then scrambles to stitch into a story. In this view, the wild plots of dreams are your mind’s narrator doing its best to impose meaning on essentially random input. It’s less romantic, but it explains a lot of dream weirdness.
What we genuinely don’t know
Here’s the humbling part: these theories aren’t mutually exclusive, and none is fully proven. Big open questions remain:
