Here is an unsettling thought to start with: the body reading this sentence is, in a very physical sense, not the same body that existed a few years ago. A huge share of the cells and molecules that make you “you” have been quietly swapped out and replaced while you got on with your life. You are less a fixed object than a slow-moving river — the shape stays recognizable, but the water moving through it is almost never the same.

This isn’t poetry; it’s biology, and it’s stranger and more specific than the tidy sayings suggest. Your tissues are in a constant state of demolition and reconstruction, and the pace varies wildly depending on which part of you we’re talking about. Some of you is only days old. Some of you is as old as you are.

The parts that live fast and die young

Start with the tissues taking the most punishment. The lining of your gut is on the front line of digestion, bathed in acid and enzymes, scraped by everything you eat. It can’t last, so it doesn’t — it’s rebuilt on a timescale of days. Your skin tells a similar story: the outer surface is constantly flaking away and being replaced from below, which is why a meaningful fraction of ordinary household dust is, somewhat grimly, shed human skin.

Your blood is another fast lane. Red blood cells circulate for a few months before they wear out and are broken down and recycled. In all of these high-turnover tissues, the body you had last season is genuinely, physically gone — rebuilt from the food you’ve eaten and the air you’ve breathed since.

The parts that refuse to change

But here’s where the famous line — “you replace yourself completely every seven years” — falls apart. It’s a myth, and a tidy one, because it assumes everything renews at the same steady clip. It doesn’t. Some of the most important parts of you are remarkably permanent.

Most of the neurons in the core of your brain are with you for life. The cells firing as you read this are, broadly, the same cells that were present in your early childhood — they don’t get routinely swapped out the way skin or gut cells do. The lens of your eye changes very little after it forms, and significant parts of your heart turn over extraordinarily slowly. These long-lived structures are exceptions to the river, and important ones.

Why some injuries never fully heal

This split between the fast-renewing and the near-permanent isn’t trivia — it has real consequences for health. Tissues that replace themselves constantly are generally good at healing. Cut your skin or damage your gut lining, and the body’s renewal machinery is already primed to rebuild.

The stubborn, long-lived tissues are a different story. Because the brain and heart don’t readily manufacture replacements for their core cells, serious damage to them is so hard to recover from. A deep skin wound knits itself back together; a heart attack or a brain injury destroys cells the body was never set up to mass-produce. The same property that keeps those tissues stable over a lifetime is exactly what makes their injuries so lasting.

A design with a logic

Look at the overall pattern and it stops seeming random. The tissues exposed to the most wear and the highest risk of damage — gut, skin, blood — are the ones built to be cheap and disposable, replaced early and often. The tissues that store who you are — your memories, the wiring of your brain — are the ones the body works hardest to preserve unchanged.

That’s a sensible trade-off. You want your defensive surfaces to be renewable, because they take constant hits. You want the seat of your identity to be stable, because rebuilding it from scratch would risk erasing you in the process. Renewal and permanence are both strategies, each matched to a different job.

The strange comfort in it

There’s something oddly reassuring buried in all this churn. Much of the physical material of past hardships — the cells that were there during your worst illnesses or most stressful years — has literally been replaced. At the same time, the part of you that remembers those years, the neural core, has quietly persisted to carry the story forward.

So the next time someone says people never really change, you can offer a more accurate version: physically, most of you changes constantly, a little every day. It’s the small, stubborn, unchanging core that makes you continuously, recognizably yourself — a living thing that is somehow brand new and very old at the same time.
